Business as Usual
is a response to the precipice upon which we currently find ourselves, one that looms over the chasm of the climate crisis and increasing social inequality. This series of artificial images, rendered through the precise yet unpredictable lens of generative AI, stands as a stark tableau of the age of the Anthropocene — an era where the excesses of human indulgence and greed cast daunting shadows over the future of the biosphere. In creating this work, I seek to capture the duality of our times: the grandeur of human achievement juxtaposed with the devastation of the environment, the celebration of wealth amidst widespread desolation, and the unsettling normalcy in the daily narrative. The monochromatic tones lend a timeless quality, echoing the historic gravitas of documentary photography with content that remains undeniably relevant today — a contemporary requiem for a species still at odds with itself. These images are an invitation to witness, to ponder, and to feel the dissonance between the world we are sold and the world we inhabit. They serve as a mirror reflecting the paradoxes of civilization, a critique of our current trajectory etched in light and shadow.
Alexander Rossa is a photographic artist and alumnus of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Czech Republic. He explores the realms of the abstract and intangible, searching for the vague line where human experience intersects them. His work is a dialogue in the syntax of imagery, through which he reassembles visual elements to forge new, comprehensive interpretations. His pieces often reflect a complicated and multilayered notion of truth.
While photography is his primary medium, his approach is distinctively hybrid, incorporating techniques of painting, collage, sculpture, scanography, and generative imaging. His creations are designed to engage viewers in a metaphorical and archeological quest to uncover the truths and meanings within our contemporary image culture. By exposing images in this light, he aspires to reappropriate them as a tool for representing the diverse and eccentric facets of human creativity.
