This animated music video for Imitate is a meditation on liminal space and the feeling of passing between worlds. I started with video of the artist performing in front of a green screen, which I keyed out and placed into dreamlike environments built from camcorder footage I shot in Joshua Tree. The desert became something otherworldly, a place that exists somewhere between the real and the imagined.
My process was rooted in a desire to blend digital and analog in ways that feel alive. After completing the animation, I passed the final edit through circuit-bent hardware and re-recorded it directly from a CRT television. The result is full of unexpected textures, glitches and the kind of beautiful imperfections that only happen when you embrace ephemerality.
