Dystopian Atlas of Absence
2023-ongoing
The project consists of digital sculptures and digital environment generated by AI based on my drawings. Sketches are turned into 3D objects with specific textures and spatial features. This project explores the dystopian vision of our feelings and the inner psychological environment created when a person is suffering due to the given social circumstances. The apocalypse can be glimpsed in our daily emotions. We can search for the impulses of dystopia in our everyday decisions, reactions and processing of feelings. The project focuses on the feminist theme of agency and lack thereof. The absence of agency points to a society in which the possibility to act and influence one’s life disappears. Dystopian atlas of imaginary and physical objects, situations and texts that will make the feeling of powerlessness and loss visible and tangible. During the generating process, I am pushing AI against its normative “styles“ and “prescribed“ emotions by using two antagonistic elements – the use of abstraction in a digital AI environment oriented exclusively towards stylized, kitschy realism, and the poetic expression of emotions of sadness and helplessness in databases that are primarily programmed for positive emotions and descriptive approaches. Can artificial intelligence be helpful in speculating and/or envisioning human suffering and ways out of it?
