The Meaning of, Mirror, 2025

The Meaning of, Mirror is a self-portrait exploring controllable generative AI through meaningful visual grammar. The work draws inspiration from Charlie Smith’s poem “The Meaning of Birds,” using imagery extracted as “brushes” that compose the final portrait. The brushes themselves are curated from Creative Commons imagery that resonates with the themes and imagery in Smith’s poem. Technically, this piece is built on concepts found in papers such as “Generative Art Using Neural Visual Grammars and Dual Encoders” and “CLIPDraw.”

Participants can create their own artwork with the interface that accompanies this piece. Participants can define their own “brushes” or mosaic pieces, control which aspects can be modified (such as placement, color, and size of brush strokes), pause the generation to make manual adjustments, and freeze specific areas of the canvas to protect them from further algorithmic changes.
The Meaning of, Mirror serves as one demonstration of what’s possible with this approach. The Gallery will show other works created during CVPR 2025.
